II. Curriculum

The Biology Department offers Batchelor's, Master of Science, and Ph.D degrees. They offer graduate programs in Neuroscience, Biophysics & Structural Biology, and Molecular & Cellular Biology. On the Master's level, there is a Genetic Counseling program. The primary areas of teaching and research interests in the Biology Department are genetics, molecular biology, development, immunology, neurobiology, motility, cell biology, structural biology, and environment/ecology.

III. Purpose and Scope of the Collection

The Biology collection supports teaching and research on the undergraduate level, the graduate level through the Ph.D., and faculty research. It also supports the research interests of the Rosensteil Basic Medical Sciences Research Center, the Volen Center for Complex Systems.

IV. Cooperative Agreements

The Boston Library Consortium is a valuable resource for those needing access to items outside of the Gerstenzang Science Library collection. The Boston Library Consortium has served as an effective medium for the purchase of selected electronic journals and online databases, providing consortial discounts and the added negotiating strength of a group in defining license terms. Brandeis also purchases electronic resources via NELINET and the North East Research Libraries (NERL).

V. Geographical Coverage

VI. Period Coverage

The emphasis of the collection is with 20th and 21st Century scientific literature, particularly items published within the last 10-20 years.

VII. Date of Publications

As the Science Library emphasizes current research, the vast majority of acquisitions are of recent imprints, i.e., within the last three years. Criteria for weeding includes, but is not limited, to outdated textbooks, duplicate copies, superseded reference material, and works in poor condition.

VIII. Languages

The primary language of the collection is English. Materials in other languages are acquired as appropriate. Some materials found in the collection are written in German, Russian, French and Italian. Translations are preferred, except when materials in their original language are deemed important, or if English versions are not available. No item is excluded from the collection solely because of language.

IX. Types of Materials

Serials and monographic series are the primary types of collected materials, in keeping with the purpose of the collection. Electronic resources include bibliographic databases, such as BIOSIS, and electronic versions of journals. Conference proceedings, collected works, and textbooks are purchased selectively. The Library does not acquire technical reports, or dissertations other than by Brandeis scholars.

X. Location of Materials Collection

The Biology collection is housed in the Gerstenzang Science. Materials dealing with the cognitive side of neuroscience, and social policy aspects of environmental studies reside in the Goldfarb Library.
